How it works
The method
Fuel = distance ÷ economy when economy is distance per fuel (km/L, mpg, km/kWh), or distance × economy ÷ 100 when it is fuel per 100 (L/100 km, kWh/100 km). Cost = fuel × price per litre, gallon, kg or kWh; add tolls and parking, then divide between people.
Worked example
320 km there and back at 16 km/L: 640 ÷ 16 = 40 L; at 120 a litre, 40 × 120 = 4800, plus a toll of 200 = 5000, or 1250 each for 4 people. At 6.5 L/100 km, 450 km needs 450 × 6.5 ÷ 100 = 29.25 L.
Common mistakes
km/L and L/100 km go opposite ways: a bigger km/L is better, a bigger L/100 km is worse. US and UK gallons differ (3.785411784 L and 4.54609 L), so mpg (US) and mpg (UK) are not the same number. The car's display can differ from what it really uses — two full fill-ups give the real figure.
Questions & answers
How do I find my car's real fuel economy?
Fill the tank to full and note the odometer. Drive as usual. Fill to full again and note the odometer and the litres put in. Distance ÷ litres = km/L. The Fill-up mileage tab does it for you.
How do I change L/100 km to km/L?
Divide 100 by it: 5 L/100 km = 100 ÷ 5 = 20 km/L, and the other way, 20 km/L = 100 ÷ 20 = 5 L/100 km. The Convert units tab gives mpg (US and UK) too.
Why are there two kinds of mpg?
A US gallon is 3.785411784 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 litres, so the same car shows a bigger mpg in the UK. Choose the one your car or country uses.
Can I use it for CNG, LPG or an electric car?
Yes. Choose km/kg or km/m³ for gas sold by weight or volume, and km/kWh, kWh/100 km or Wh/km for an electric car. For an electric car you can add the charging efficiency.
Are fuel prices built in?
No. Prices change often and differ by place, and an old price would give a wrong answer, so you type the price at your pump or on your bill.
Does this page send my numbers anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated on your device.
