How it works
The method
Age is counted in whole years first, then whole months, then the days left over. Someone born on 29 February completes a year on 29 February in leap years and on 28 February in other years.
Worked example
Born 15 March 2000, on 10 May 2025: 25 years (to 15 March 2025), 1 month (to 15 April 2025) and 25 days (to 10 May) — 25 years, 1 month, 25 days.
Common mistakes
Subtracting only the year numbers can give one year too many: from 15 March 2000 to 10 March 2025 is 24 full years, not 25. Months have 28 to 31 days, so months and days cannot be found by dividing a number of days by 30.
Questions & answers
Why is my age one day different from another website?
Websites count in different ways. Here: first whole years, then whole months, then the days left. A new day of age starts at your birth time (12:00 AM if you don't give one) in the birth place's time zone. Also check that “Age on this date” shows today — the Today button is highlighted when it does.
Why can't I pick 29, 30 or 31 in the day list?
The day list only shows days that exist in the chosen month and year. Pick the month and year first. 29 February appears only in leap years (for example 2000, 2024, 2028).
I was born on 29 February. When do I complete a new year of age?
On 29 February in leap years, and on 28 February in other years.
From what time are the hours, minutes and seconds counted?
From the birth time and time zone you choose. If “I don't know the birth time” is ticked, from 12:00 AM (midnight) on your date of birth. The exact moment used is written under the result.
